Gravel Calculator
How much gravel you need from the area and depth — cubic metres and tonnes.
Volume and tonnes of gravel from the area and depth you measure. Density defaults to 1.5 t/m³ for loose gravel — ask the yard if theirs differs.
Measure
Length and width default to metres. Depth defaults to millimetres — 100 mm, not 0.1 m.
Waste allowance
Required material
0.66 m³
You need approximately 0.66 m³ including 10% waste. Volume is length × width × depth.

- 6 m × 2 m × 50 mm.
- 10% waste is included.
- Uses 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre, a typical loose-gravel density.
- Wet or compacted gravel can be heavier. Compaction is not calculated separately — use waste if you expect it to settle.
- Confirm the order against how the supplier sells it — truck, bulk bag, or bagged.

Worked example
A path 6 m by 2 m, 50 mm deep, is 0.6 m³. With 10% waste that’s 0.66 m³. At 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre, that’s about 1.0 t — handy to know before you ring the yard.
FAQ
- Why 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre?
- It’s a typical loose-gravel density. Wet or compacted gravel can be heavier. Ask the supplier if the rate differs.
- What units are the measurements?
- Length and width default to metres. Depth defaults to millimetres, so 50 mm is 50, not 0.05 m.
- Does this include compaction?
- Not as a separate step. If the gravel will settle, keep a waste allowance on.
