- How is the octal number built?
- Each of owner, group, and public is read 4, write 2, and execute 1. Add the bits you tick. 7 is read+write+execute.
- What does the symbol form mean?
- Nine characters in order: owner, group, then everyone else. A letter means that permission is on. A dash means it is off.
- Does this change files on my computer?
- No. It only shows the mode. Apply it yourself with chmod if you need to.
